The USAID Energy Security Project (ESP) in cooperation with the Bioenergy Association of Ukraine (UABio) initiated the first comprehensive training programme on biomethane production in Ukraine.

The main goal of the programme is to provide all stakeholders with the knowledge and tools necessary to develop effective biomethane projects that will create new jobs, stimulate investment in local communities, help Ukraine reduce its carbon footprint, and promote innovative approaches and robust strategies that are in line with international best practices.

According to Kathleen Kirsch, Critical Infrastructure Team Leader at the USAID/Ukraine Office of Economic Growth, the importance of biomethane in the current energy discourse cannot be overstated. As Ukraine embarks on a path to energy independence and sustainable development, the role of biomethane is becoming increasingly important. This training programme aims to bridge the gap between current global practices and the enormous opportunities offered by biomethane, especially in terms of meeting European Union standards and contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Rafael Monroy, TetraTech's Clean Hydrogen Advisor, said the curriculum brings together the most relevant information and analyses best practices in biomethane production to raise awareness and expand the community of biomethane enthusiasts.

The programme covers the global and regional status of biomethane development, research on the potential and specifics of the biomethane market in Ukraine, modern production technologies, synergies of biomethane with green hydrogen and the potential for implementing best practices of European biogas and biomethane production in Ukraine.
